The United Nations has revealed that 2.5 tonnes of natural uranium have gone missing in an undisclosed location in southern Libya, which is not under government control. The discovery was made last week after a routine inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The IAEA says it has struggled to gain regular access to the region due to continued fighting between the two factions controlling the country since Muammar Gaddafi was removed from power in 2011. The UN has stated that the loss of knowledge about the current location of nuclear material may present a radiological risk as well as nuclear security concerns.
